8 Things We Currently Do Not Own || Minimalist Lifestyle

Hi guys! I thought it would be fun to do a post of our current living situation. Most of you know that I have been decluttering weekly for the past 6 months and if you’d like to join us, please do! It’s been quite a learning experience and has helped me tremendously. Doug is always reminding me that we do not own a tv {hmmm, can you guess what one of those top 8 things are yet!??} Anyways, we’ve learned to live with less and it’s actually quite amazing! I’ll share other ways we watch television below.

top 8 things we currently do not own in our home

1.) Yes, a TV – when we moved to Myrtle Beach, we didn’t bring anything but clothing and photos, important papers, etc. No furniture. Just the suitcases that fit into our cars. We found an apartment and lived without anything for 2 months. I tried to find items frugally but that wasn’t happening so, we did end up getting a living room set from RTG and other necessities online. Still to this day we have no tv’s. We do watch YouTube tv shows on our laptops in the evening though. It’s kind of refreshing.

2.) Living Room Wall Art – I attempted to decorate this apartment in style but the more that I tried to envision the artwork, mirrors, shelves above the sofa, the more I liked it bare.

Throw pillows are enough art to create a cozy home!

3.) Microwave – this unit did not come with one and from what I understand, the upgraded apartments do not either. We chose not to purchase one because they take up too much space on the counter and we can cook all of our food on the stove, in the oven and the toaster oven.

4.) Dinnerware + Pot/Pan Collection – these things take up too much space in the cabinets and we really have no need for them. We have 4 dinner plates in the cabinet and that’s it. Try to have only what you need. If you have only 4 people eating at your house daily have 4 dinner plates, 4 bowls, etc….we only have 2 cereal bowls and 2 spaghetti bowls. It’s just perfect considering there’s not a lot of people eating here in our home.

5.) A Coffee Table – I’ve been annoyed with these tables for a long time and haven’t owned one for many, many years. The family just doesn’t use it and there’s no need to pile things up on it that don’t belong. If you eliminate items that don’t provide a place for clutter, then you won’t have any clutter!! We do have a small side table that can easily be moved around and placed in front of the sofa if needed. And we do have a dining room table, so that is where we sit often.

6.) Beauty/Cleaning Products – while we do have some of these items in our home, we don’t have a tonnage. I think it’s important to eliminate these stock overflows because they are clutter-some. We recently went all natural with our cleaning products and talk about how great it is to have one cleaner for everything in your home. It’s truly been a game changer in my life. And I’m learning not to buy all those shelf products in the beauty aisles as well. Number one, I don’t wear a ton of make-up and my skin is sensitive so all I need is a dove beauty bar and some good lotion. Toss whatever you don’t use or think you’ll someday use.

7.) Dressers – most every apartment we have had has great closet space so we never really needed a dresser. Doug on the other hand is used to ‘normal’ pieces of furniture and I had to show him ways to put clothing in other places. We use baskets in our closets for smaller items like socks, etc. And he uses a 3 drawer side table (mini dresser) for his bulkier items. I don’t really like dressers unless they are tall and fit in smaller places well. I’m sure I’ll have a gorgeous one someday but not today! Here’s Hannah’s room without a dresser. I like the clean look. Just organize your closet to be the dresser.

8.) Floor Lamps – these items gather so much dust and take up too much space. Get rid of them! A small lamp on an end table should do the trick. I mean really…..they’re completely outdated anyways. No one needs a floor lamp! Go minimal. Open your blinds. Enjoy the natural light.

That’s it for now. I’m sure I could go on and on. These are just some of the things we currently have no use for and maybe it will inspire you to live with a little less. Always remember that less is more. Live within your means. Don’t acquire things you can live without! Until next time. Stay clean, stay sassy!
